Review
Defining Moments , an autobiography by Marius Barnard with Simon Norval is a moving account of the life of the great doctor, a South African, who was part of the team that performed the first heart transplant with his brother at Groote Schuur Hospital in 1967. These brothers came from the humblest family beginnings and grew to be world leaders and will always be respected and of historical importance. The autobiography is written with humor, pathos, and great insights into history of politics and medicine during a critical time when the world was changing. This caring man took his professional life futher; during the darkest periods of Aparteid he fought to end it as a member of South African Parliament. He also was a leader in the financial world to help his fellow man's health and welfare, as the one who started critical illness insurance which became a world model. It is a book well written and enjoyable to read. It will stick with you for years.
