Long description
In the annals of South African rock music one band stands head and shoulders on the backs of giants - Freedom's Children. In their brief four years tenure they produced some of the most innovative, challenging and ultimately timeless rock music - fuelled by the emerging worldwide psychedelic movement and influenced by nothing but their own limitless imaginations they pushed music to new frontiers. Of the three albums that FC released it is this - their debut - that is
perhaps both the most startling in its inventiveness. Fusing elements of folk, psych, rock, quaint madrigals, pop and way out beat poetry they forged a unique sound in a land that was held
captive by the disposable pop sluts of the day. As with other trail blazing psychedelic albums of the time (1968/69) BATTLE HYMN OF THE BROKEN HEARTED HOARD was snubbed by the mainstream radio and press who regarded it as wierd. Since the advent of the Retro series in 2000 we have had many queries for this album from fans and dealers alike but the release was hamstrung by lack of quality material for the reissue. With the discovery of a virgin vinyl copy and new photos the long awaited reissue of “Battle Hymn…” is now a reality.
Review
An hallucinogenic hodgepodge of pastoral folk, psychedelic pop and utter progressive rock excess that cemented their reputation as South African acid rock visionaries.
