James Phillips died largely ignored in his own time and in his own country. Dying without fame is not necessarily the same thing as having not created a substantial body of work. Nick Drake and the small but high quality oeuvre that he left behind is evidence of that.
Here we have a collection of 20 songs that span Phillips recording career from early recordings with the Springs-based new-wave band Corporal Punishment, to the final demoes that he laid down in 1995.
A strictly chronological sequencing would have more clearly shown the evolution in style, the growing sophistication of his songs as he perfected his craft. The sequencing that we have here sacrifices that academic aspect for a better mood, a better flow from song to song.
Phillips was a fine songwriter and a South African original. This collection is a good introduction to his work, but still manages to leave opportunity for further exploration of his recorded legacy.
