The Soweto String Quartet have written eleven original pieces – and borrowed two from contemporary composers – to create this album of unique magic, with the help of some of Soweto’s greatest contemporary musicians. Although SSQ make use of the most modern recording technology in these brilliant studio recordings, they never lose the wondrous joy of the live performance. The compositions are original, but the roots and the rhythms of the music are ageless, pre-dating recorded African history. The classical instruments on which they play these sweet melodies also have their own centuries-old histories. They are a timeless bridge between the formal, structured traditions of Europe and the innovative musical energy of Africa: a bridge between the old and the new; a bridge between millennia.
