Oupa is fedup with his stubborn son, who doesn't want to accept apenny from him to develop his farm. So the old man decides to bring his 18year-oldgr and daughter Martie to live with him and his other son's snobbish family in Houghton. From the start Martie is treated as the poor relative by her aunt Mathilda and spoiled cousin Felicity. Complications ensue when Felicity's boyfriend Paul begins taking an interest in Martie.
Everything culminates at Felicity's 21st birthday party when Paul can't keep his eyes off Martie. When Felicity and Paul announce their engagement, Martie flees. Her father, thinking that Oupa is terminally ill, turns up unexpectedly, to find his daughter gone and his father alive and up to his old tricks. But Paulcatches up at the station with Martie, the girl he truly loves, and Oupa is reunited with his two sons.
