Saturday Nights & Sunday Mornings

Short description

Counting Crows’ “Saturday Nights & Sunday Mornings” is just your average brilliant, unsparing rock & roll song cycle about the high life and the low life, about sin and whatever follows. This is a dark ride. “Saturday Nights & Sunday Mornings” is less Animal House and more Requiem For A Dream. So if “Saturday Nights & Sunday Mornings” is the last album that Counting Crows (or for that matter anybody else) ever release, at least the band will be going out with one hell of a big bang.

This is an album with two distinct yet deeply related halves that will not only remind long-time admirers of what makes Counting Crows a great band in the first place – it reminded the band as well. “Saturday Nights”, the album’s angry, electric, dissolute opening salvo, was produced by Gil Norton (The Pixies, Foo Fighters), a long-time friend and associate of the band who previously produced the band’s second album “Recovering The Satellites”. The more acoustic and folk-influenced “Sunday Mornings” was produced by Brian Deck whose past credits include Modest Mouse and Iron & Wine.

  Comeback...of note!

I think like all hardcore Counting Crows fans, we have been waiting a long time for them to bring out an album of any substance again. The last was Recovering the satellites. Everything else since then has been a backward step for them. But at last! An album which captures you and doesnt let you go. Remember how you felt when you listened to "August"? These times are back. If this is to be the Crows final album (and thier website confirms that it will be), they have left at the top of thier game. The first half of the album (Saturday nights) see's the crows return to thier rock roots, guitar rifts, and powerful tunes, much like a lot of R.T.S. The second half (Sunday mornings) sees the crows revert back to what they do best: make music that touches you, right there in the deepest part of your soul. Ive had this CD on rotation now for a while, and with every listen you discover a new quirk, a new lyric, a new feeling in each song. Only the crows can write a line like this: "You open windows and you wait for someone warm to come inside and then freeze to death alone" [from "Hanging tree"]. Brilliant. Good job Counting Crows. Very good job.
