'Black Swan' is without a doubt one of the best films I have seen in 2011. It is a diabolical thriller which tests the viewer’s intelligence as it dances from frame to frame. Darren Aronofsky, famous for ‘The Wrestler’ and ‘Requiem For A Dream’, directs the mind of a ballerina bordering on insanity. That mind so astonishingly mastered by Academy Award winner Natalie Portman. Natalie Portman embodies Nina Sayers, a fragile but brilliant ballerina on the verge of the biggest role of her career, the swan queen, in a modern interpretation of Swan Lake. Natalie takes us on a mesmerizing journey as her character morphs into the black swan not only on stage but in her psyche. She gives one of the best female lead performances in decades. A performance worthy of every single honour and praise she received for this role. She is supported by an incredible ensemble of actors, all of whom give equally brilliant performances. Veteran actress Barbara Hershey, Winona Ryder, Mila Kunis and Vincent Cassel. ‘Black Swan’ is incredible from start to finish, the subtle nuances of horror keeps you at the edge of your seat and the spectacular ballet scenes give you an appreciation for the art form. What I love most about this film is that it solicits a lot of thinking. The movie is truly one of those that are in the eye of the beholder. Everyone who watches it walks out with a different interpretation and a different response. That is what makes it the masterpiece I claim it to be.

A talented ballet dancer wins the role of the white swan in the popular play, Swan Lake. The white swan symbolizes everything good and pure. So the ballet dancer slowly goes insane whiles she becomes more and more like the black swan.
